ULLOVU – On 9 August 2025, Grade 12A at Ullovu Secondary School celebrated Women’s Day in a truly unique and memorable way. The boys of the class planned a heartfelt surprise for their female classmates, aiming not only to commemorate the day but also to promote respect, unity, and appreciation among learners. With careful guidance from Mrs. Govindasamy, their English teacher, and Mr. Myende, the Deputy Principal, the boys spent weeks organising decorations, heart-shaped balloons with messages, and small thoughtful gestures to make the occasion unforgettable.

The planning itself was a lesson in teamwork and responsibility. The boys held discussions with the school staff, brainstormed creative ideas, and coordinated the logistics, ensuring that the girls would be surprised while the message of respect and appreciation remained central. “We wanted to show our female classmates how much we value them and make them feel special,” said Ntando Msomi, one of the learners involved in organising the event. Despite challenges in keeping the surprise under wraps, the boys were determined to make it meaningful rather than just a display of gifts or decorations.
When the girls arrived, their reactions were priceless. They were met with smiles, laughter, colourful decorations, and heartfelt messages. For many, it was a moment of pure joy and appreciation. “We felt very special and appreciated,” reflected Nompilo Khanyile, one of the girls who attended. “It made our last Women’s Day in high school truly unforgettable.” The celebration created a sense of connection and reinforced the value of kindness, empathy, and recognition within the classroom community.
The event also served as a learning opportunity for the boys, highlighting the importance of treating women with respect and consideration. Mr. Myende explained that the initiative was part of a broader effort to cultivate values of empathy and protection for women from a young age. “Small gestures like this plant seeds for healthier, more respectful relationships in the future,” he said, emphasizing the long-term significance of the activity in shaping attitudes and behaviour.
Mrs. Govindasamy added that the event was a powerful combination of teaching and empowerment. It encouraged learners to reflect on their actions, understand the importance of respect and gratitude, and practise teamwork in meaningful ways. The celebration went beyond symbolic gestures, giving the students a hands-on opportunity to demonstrate thoughtfulness, cooperation, and care for their peers.
For the girls, the surprise was more than just a celebration; it was an experience that strengthened bonds and left lasting memories. They realised that their presence was valued, that their voices mattered, and that their contributions to the school community were appreciated. For the boys, it was a reminder of the responsibility they carry to treat women with respect and to recognise the importance of equality and empathy in everyday interactions.
The 12A Boys’ Women’s Day surprise has now become a shining example of how schools can combine celebration with meaningful life lessons. From secret planning to the moment of joy and appreciation, the event left both boys and girls with a deeper understanding of respect, responsibility, and community. This Women’s Day at Ullovu was not just a celebration of women; it was a celebration of values, kindness, and the power of thoughtful action that will stay with the learners for years to come.
