ULLOVU – Grade 11 learner Wandile Msweli has been selected to travel to the United Kingdom as part of a group from The Mark Fish Foundation, invited by the Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT). Wandile, who plays for the KZN Football Academy, will be away from 4 October to 12 October 2025, taking part in coaching sessions, friendly matches, and educational workshops in London.

The trip, managed by Edwin Doran Sports Tours, will see the group accommodated at the Holiday Inn Express Dartford. Activities led by CACT staff are designed to expose young players to world-class coaching, teamwork, cultural exchange, and personal development. Beyond football, the initiative is about giving South African learners a chance to measure themselves against global standards and return home with lessons that extend far beyond the field.
Wandile’s mother expressed her pride and anticipation, saying the opportunity confirmed what many had seen in her son from an early age. She explained that sometimes parents hear others talk about a child’s talent, but it only becomes real when opportunities such as this arrive. She said the family is happy but also a little nervous as it is a big step for him. She shared that Wandile is very excited and has even said that if further opportunities present themselves in England, he would be willing to stay and pursue his football career while remaining close to his family. She added that he has been involved in football from a young age, with the KZN Academy grooming him into one of their best. “We hope he does well and carries himself with respect and discipline,” she said.
For Wandile, this opportunity represents the reward of years of dedication to football while balancing his academic responsibilities. Teachers note that his achievement shows what is possible when talent is matched with discipline and consistent effort, inspiring others to chase their own dreams with determination.

Principal Mrs. Gcabashe highlighted the significance of the achievement, noting that Ullovu is in full support of Wandile’s selection to take part in this international football development programme. She said the school strongly believes that all learners have the right to dream big and the responsibility to work hard at pursuing their goals, and that their backgrounds should serve as stepping stones to greater heights. She explained that Wandile has embraced the school values of excellence and resilience, showing self-discipline by balancing his academic work with his sporting career. “This trip will open many more doors for him as it comes with world-class exposure and much-needed development. We wish him the best. May he go out there and make the USS family, and most importantly himself, proud,” she said.

The school community has also rallied around the achievement, seeing it as proof that opportunities in sports can complement academics when learners are disciplined and supported. For many of Wandile’s peers, his journey serves as motivation to continue striving in their own areas of interest, whether in classrooms, sports fields, or cultural activities. Teachers and staff see his selection as a reminder that Ullovu learners can compete on international stages when given the right foundation.
Wandile’s selection is not only a personal milestone but also a collective victory for Ullovu Secondary School. It underscores the importance of nurturing talent at a young age, encouraging learners to pursue their passion with determination, and showing them that their dreams are within reach. His journey is a reminder that with dedication, discipline, and support, learners can rise to compete on international stages and inspire others to follow.
