Grade 9 Subject Choice Guide Hub

Choosing subjects at the end of Grade 9 is not just about classes for the next three years — it’s about opening or narrowing the doors to study and careers after school. Good choices make learning meaningful and raise your chances of success; poor choices can limit options later.

This Hub explains the core subjects, then dives deep into three common streams learners choose at Ullovu: Commerce, Humanities, and Sciences. For each subject you’ll find what it covers, the skills it builds, typical career routes, recommended Grade-9 baseline markers, and practical tips for success.

Quick note: Core requirements, regulations, and university entry rules are set by the individual tertiary institutions. Use this Hub to guide decisions — and always confirm specific course entry requirements with the institutions you plan to apply to.

Stream Overview

At Ullovu Secondary School, subject choices are grouped into different streams. Each stream is designed to build a set of skills and open specific career pathways. By choosing a stream, you are not locking yourself into one job forever, but you are shaping the kinds of opportunities available to you after matric. Below, we explore the three main streams in depth — Commerce, Humanities, and Sciences — highlighting their subjects, the skills they develop, and the career doors they can open both in South Africa and abroad.
