The #1MillionMaths campaign encourages learners from across South Africa to engage with Mathematics through practice challenges and problem-solving sessions on the Siyavula online platform. The initiative rewards consistency, accuracy, and perseverance, all qualities that Aphelele and Unako have demonstrated throughout the year.
Principal Mrs. Gcabashe expressed immense pride in the learners’ success, describing it as a reflection of Ullovu’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. She highlighted the school’s partnership with the Capitec Foundation, which continues to strengthen the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science.
“As Ullovu Secondary School (a Maths, Science and Technology school in Umlazi District) we seek to enable our learners to be innovative and to thrive in STEM careers. Having our learners take top-ten positions nationally is a testament to the hard work and fruitful result of this partnership,” she said.
She added that the school is steadily advancing toward its vision of producing future leaders in science and technology: “The school is shaping up in the right direction, in line with our vision of academic excellence. The future of the Ullovu Township and neighbouring community is bright.”
Mrs. Gcabashe also praised Aphelele and Unako for their self-discipline and resilience, crediting the teamwork between learners, teachers, and parents. “They have worked hard, displaying a high level of dedication to their work. We appreciate their teachers and parents for the support they continue to give. A lot of work was done at home, it takes self-discipline and consistent encouragement,” she explained.
She reaffirmed Ullovu’s commitment to supporting excellence in Mathematics through initiatives like the Peer Tutor Programme and the Maths Club, both driven by learners themselves. “We encourage collaborative learning that makes Mathematics enjoyable, practical, and meaningful,” she said.
This milestone marks another proud moment for Ullovu Secondary School: Proof that with discipline, guidance, and opportunity, township learners can rise to compete confidently on national platforms.
