ULLOVU – In commemoration of Women’s Month, Grade 11 girls of Ullovu Secondary gathered on 26 August for an empowering talk led by Mrs. Govindasamy, accompanied by Miss S.R. Mthembu. The session went beyond a classroom activity, becoming a safe space where young women could reflect on their worth, share their experiences, and be encouraged to embrace their individuality.

Mrs. Govindasamy explained that her motivation was to create a space where learners felt both seen and supported: she wanted them to leave with tools to navigate the academic, social, and personal challenges they face daily. She emphasised that talks like these are not just about marking an event, but about shaping future leaders.

Her themes were clear and resonant. She encouraged the learners to value themselves beyond beauty standards, to recognise the power of education in transforming women’s lives, and to invest in healthy friendships rooted in sisterhood and respect. Body positivity, personal care, and confidence were highlighted as essentials, alongside the importance of setting boundaries, protecting mental health, and standing firm against peer pressure.

The learners engaged fully, listening attentively and responding with gratitude. Many expressed that they left the room feeling more confident in themselves and motivated to pursue their dreams without fear.

Mrs. Govindasamy reflected on the significance of such spaces: “These talks remind our young women of their value and potential, helping them to believe in themselves. Beyond what textbooks teach, they provide a safe space to share, to learn, and to be inspired by positive role models.”

In closing, she left the girls with a lasting message: always remember your worth, carry your confidence and dreams with you, respect yourself and support one another, and never allow anyone to dim the light you bring into the world. You are not just the future—you are the present, and you have the power to shape it.

The event stood as a reminder that empowerment is not only taught, but lived—through voices, unity, and the courage to break barriers together. Listen to the talk below:
