ULLOVU – On Wednesday, 17 September 2025, Ullovu Secondary School proudly marked another milestone as two of its Grade 11 learners, Owami Vezi and Simphiwe “Sqalo” Sibiya, participated in the Umlazi District Financial Literacy Speech Contest held at the Chatsworth Education Centre. The event brought together learners from across Umlazi District who met the strict criteria of excelling in Mathematics (Level 5 or higher) while pursuing subjects in the Commerce Stream.

The contest, designed to test learners’ knowledge of financial literacy and their ability to articulate ideas in a competitive setting, proved to be a valuable platform for growth and exposure. Both Owami and Simphiwe represented Ullovu with pride, showcasing confidence, preparation, and intellectual sharpness. Owami Vezi distinguished herself through her thorough research, effective time management, and ability to take constructive suggestions positively. As a result, she has been chosen to represent Umlazi District at the Provincial round of the competition.

Deputy Principal Mr. Myende, who led and supported the learners through the process, explained the broader value of the contest for Ullovu: “This competition is most relevant and important, especially for the Commerce Stream. We use it to encourage learners to pursue Commerce from Grade 9 into Grade 10 because it offers platforms like this. We congratulate Owami as she proceeds to the next level. The competition will only get tougher, but we are confident that with support and preparation, she will rise to the challenge. Our role now is to continue strengthening her presentations, while she also pushes herself to improve.”

For both learners, the journey to the contest required commitment beyond the classroom. Countless hours of preparation, drafting, and refining speeches became part of their routine. The contest not only tested their knowledge of financial concepts but also their ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively before an audience. Through this process, they gained valuable skills in research, and critical thinking—skills that will serve them long after the competition.

Principal Mrs. Gcabashe echoed these sentiments, noting the importance of exposing learners to such opportunities: “We are excited that this contest gives our learners an opportunity to engage with financial literacy at such a young age. These skills will help them to become responsible citizens in terms of finances. We hope that those who listen to their speeches will also learn valuable lessons. We congratulate Owami as she prepares for the Provincial round, and we celebrate both Owami and Simphiwe for their dedication and effort.”

The Financial Literacy Speech Contest is more than just a competition. It is a platform where learners refine their public speaking skills, learn the value of preparation, and deepen their understanding of financial concepts that will serve them for life. For Ullovu, it is also an example of how academic excellence, when paired with strong mentorship, can open doors to opportunities beyond the classroom.

Owami’s selection to represent Umlazi District is a source of pride not only for the school but also for the wider community. Her journey to the Provincial stage reflects the resilience, discipline, and determination that Ullovu seeks to instill in all its learners.

As the countdown to the Provincial contest begins, the Ullovu family stands firmly behind her—confident that she will continue to carry the school’s name with distinction and inspire her peers to dream bigger, work harder, and seize every opportunity that comes their way.
